Emptiness

I have lived my entire life on the East Coast of the US--first in New York City, and now in Connecticut.  When I travel out west, especially to the vast places that used to be prairie and onto the high plains, I feel a beautiful but also unsettling emptiness.

  1. When we drive to "civilization" from our house in the Sierra foothills of California we drive through miles of this type of landscape. It never gets old.

  2. It's amazing how HUGE our country really is. I was born on the East coast but have lived much of my life (from 1st grade on...) in the Midwest, and it still amazes me how compact everything is - and congested - when I go back home to CT.

  3. Love the desaturated look of the vast prairie and threatening sky.

  5. This is such a wonderful photo..especially with the cloudscape you had that day. I've almost always lived in prairie country and so can really relate to this. It may look empty but there is such life here in all the interconnected parts of the ecosystem...it is just not noticed at first glance. It is so awesome to see the grasses wave in the wind. This is a fave of mine.
