Rule of thirds

This shot of three young men fishing off Sherwoods Falls seems to fit the Rule of Thirds.

Unique camera angle

I've posted many pictures taken from the shore of Paper Goods Pond; this one was taken from its surface. We took the kayaks out this afternoon. At the far end, we saw a great blue heron gracefully stalking in the shallows. We've never seen one of them here before.

Endearing

As we strolled by Paper Goods Pond this evening, we saw a couple sitting on one of the benches, her arm over his shoulder. Even from a distance, the love between them was obvious. By an odd coincidental quirk, it turns out that their names are John & Barbara, the same as ours. They came from Poland 20 years ago. It was, as they put it, "too late for us," so they gave all their energy to their children. Their son is now a surgeon in Florida. Their daughter (and they remembered that we had taught her in Confirmation classes over 10 years ago!) is a nurse practioner here in CT. They seemed to be so happy and content: they know they have done well with their lives, and they are still clearly in love with each other. What an uplifting experience to have met them!

Edible

In the 30 years that we have lived near Paper Goods Pond, we've seen lots of people fishing. We've never seen anyone who caught more than a few sunnies until tonight. This gentleman was sporting a good sized bass. While it is edible, he says he just does catch and release. He just wanted to gloat a bit to his fishing partner who had originally mocked his chosen spot.

Weathered

There aren't going to be many more photos of weathered windows, doors and surfaces from the abandoned factory across from Paper Goods Pond--it is being transformed into classy but affordable condos. Phase 2 out of three has just been put up for sale. A loss, perhaps, for photography, but a big gain for the town and the neighborhood. This is one of the windows in the part of the building that will be Phase 3.

Portrait

My husband, John, taken today on our 32nd wedding anniversary. It's been a great 32 years. I wouldn't mind another 32, as long as it's with him.

Together

Together, this couple sets out in a canoe on Paper Goods Pond paddling into the evening light. (To answer Steven's question, we do kayak on Paper Goods. It's about a quarter of a mike from on end to the other. At the far end, there is a pair of swans who have recently become protective parents of four fluffy grey cygnets. We sometime spy Moby Turtle, an enormous snapper who glides beneath the surface. )

Summer fun

One of favorite summer activities is kayaking. Clearly we were not alone in our passion this weekend at Lake Waramaug. That's my boat in the foreground.

Fishing at Paper Goods Pond: there's not much to catch there, so people do it for sheer relaxation.

Damaged

Severe storms blew through our small state yesterday. A branch blew down on the power line on the corner outside of our house; it burst into flame. CL&P them shut off power to our entire grid. The grid includes the local Catholic church & school. By 4AM, we had power, but our neighbors--who had localized damage--were told it might take days to get them back. Then the pole caught on fire again. CL&P deemed it better to fix it rather than letting a big church complex & school go with out power.

Smells

There is always one morning in early June when one walks out of the door, and the scent of wild roses drifts through the warming air. They are small and grow in the rougher places. Each year, I smell them before I see them.

Bliss

Our granddude, Aidan, was over for a visit. We toasted marshmallow at the fire pit in our garden. Joyously he told us, "This is the best day ever! With marshmallows!" OMG--bliss for me, too. Nothing beats grandchildren!

Renewal

Our parish celebrated the Anointing of the Sick at the 11:30 Mass today. It was a powerful service of spiritual healing, demonstrated by this man supporting his mother. I see so much love in the strength of his arm around hers.

From my past

This is the number 1 train pulling out of the northernmost station in NYC at 231st street in the Bronx. At the end of its run, it will turn around at South Ferry. My grandmother used to take me on this train when I was very little and we lived in Manhattan. We'd go to visit her brother on Staten Island. Later, we moved to Staten Island; later still, I went to the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx, and this was the train I'd take when I'd go home for visits. John & I were there this weekend for his 40th reunion at Manhattan College, just across from this terminus.
