Today is Ash Wednesday: for Catholics, it is the beginning of Lent and the solemn day on which we are reminded of our mortality--and the hope which lies beyond it. Here Father Robert places ashes of the forehead of on of the parishioners. 365/2011
Do iPhones not have flashes, so there were no hostile stares after this nice, candid photo was taken? I grew up in the Episcopal world, so we had ash Wednesday. I always liked the smudge on my forehead for some reason.
ONe does need to be stealthy! I turned off the flash and the sound, so no click. I was headed out of church after having received my ashes (it wasn't a full Mass, just a service, so we could leave once we were done), and just paused in the aisle to snap this on my way out.
Bobbie, you are a (sneaky)woman after my own heart!!! And the hostile stare I would get is from my husband, who always pretends he doesn't know me when I'm doing stealth photography...the traitor! I love this!
Nice capture! I do a lot of photography for the Triduum services at our parish and I always feel slightly uncomfortable shooting in the midst of things even though I've been officially asked to do so.
...is to fill 52 themes, one a week for the year. Some weeks, maybe I'll try to find several photos to fit the themes. Others, I may spend more time trying to perfect one that seems best to represent the theme. Three years of a photo-a-day opened my eyes, now I want to hone my skills.
Somehow, a camera allows me to see more deeply and awakens the eye. For me, undertaking these year-long challenges is a way to become more aware of the world that swirls around me.
Another gorgeous image...I love the blur leading into the clarity! You captured the spirit of Lent perfectly!

ReplyDeleteit's indeed a very good thing, thinking of the interim state of our existence, at least from time to time; well done processing.

ReplyDeleteThe added blur makes this one for me. Reminder of our spiritual struggles.
